The Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) was introduced to provide financial support to Canadians affected by COVID-19. It offers $2,000 per month for up to four months to workers who have lost income due to job loss, illness, quarantine, or caregiving responsibilities. CERB applies to employees, self-employed individuals, and contract workers, even those not eligible for EI. Applications opened April 6, 2020, through the CRA or Service Canada, with payments issued within 10 days. Those already on EI will continue receiving benefits, and future claims will automatically transition to CERB when applicable.
